What is Heat Treated Wood (HT Wood)?
Heat treated wood (HT wood) is lumber that has been subjected to a process where its core temperature is raised to at least 56°C (132.8°F) for a minimum of 30 minutes to eliminate pests. This method is one of the approved treatments under ISPM 15 standards for wood packaging material used in international trade. The process ensures that crates, pallets, and other wood meet export regulations and are marked with the official ISPM-15 stamp, verifying compliance. Heat treatment is widely used because it is chemical-free, environmentally responsible, and accepted by countries that require phytosanitary certification for wood packaging.
What is an ISPM 15 stamp?
The ISPM-15 mark is a distinctive identification mark affixed to WPM that has undergone the required treatment and meets the standard’s criteria. The mark includes the following components: the trademark of the accredited agency that treated the WPM, the facility identification of the WPM manufacturer, the indication of whether the WPM was heat treated or fumigated, the ISO country abbreviation where the WPM was treated, the IPPC-approved international symbol for compliant wood packaging material, and the DUN mark denoting dunnage.
Which countries require ISPM-15 compliant wood?
It is important to note that ISPM-15 is only mandatory for WPM involved in international trade. If you are shipping WPM within your own country, treatment and marking may not be necessary.
